DAVIS, Calif. -- Freshman Katie Kibby scattered three hits while striking out eight, and host UC Davis broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the fifth to lift the Aggies to a 3-1 victory over Iowa State to close out the Aggie Invitational I on Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.

UC Davis improved to 9-17 overall on the year, stranding six runners for the game -- five of those in scoring position. The Cyclones fell to 10-14 overall with the loss.

Kibby (6-5) surrendered a first inning run after a lead-off walk, but then nothing more, retiring seven of the final eight batters she faced to close out the win. Savannah Sanders (3-6) suffered the loss, allowing the three runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out just one over four innings.

Talyn Lewis' two-out double to the gap in left center brought home Cathlin Bingham for the first run of the game, but the Aggies answered quickly in the home half of the second. Caroline Figueroa took advantage of a second chance at the plate, thinking she had struck out if not for an illegal pitch call that erased the out.

The sophomore then roped the next pitch she saw to the fence in right field for a triple, scoring two batters later on another illegal pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

After both teams left runners on in the third and fourth innings, UC Davis was able to come through with the decisive runs in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Maddie Rojas and Alex Sotomayor knocked Sanders from the game in favor of Brianna Weilbacher, who promptly walked Taylor Peters to load the bases.

That rolled the lineup over for Brianna Warner, who slapped a ball that got through the legs of an infielder, allowing a pair of runs to score and make it 3-1. Weilbacher wriggled off the hook, stranding runners at the corners with a line out and a strikeout to end the inning.

However, Kibby and the Aggies' defense was up to the task, retiring Iowa State in order in the sixth and working around an error in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and a ground ball to close out the game.

Figueroa and Christa Costello each finished with a pair of hits to lead UC Davis, which out-hit the Cyclones, 8-3.

The Aggies return to the diamond next weekend, hosting the Aggie Invitational II at La Rue Field. UC Davis opens against Bryant on Thursday (March 16) at 3:30 p.m. The field also includes North Dakota, Saint Mary's, and Princeton.
