LONG BEACH, Calif. - Marcel Torres doubled in two runs and pitcher Meredith Cervenka blanked the Aggies for the second straight day as Long Beach State beat UC Davis 5-0 in a nonconference softball matchup on Saturday afternoon.
UC Davis dropped to 5-26 with the defeat while the 49ers, who did not allow the Aggies a run while sweeping the three-game weekend series, improved to 20-12. Lindsay Tognetti and Ashley Johnson each had hits for UC Davis.
Aggie starter Jessica Hancock limited Long Beach State to just a hit through the first two innings before the 49ers rallied for a three-run, two-out rally in the third. Lauren Johnson had a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch for the first run.
Tiffanie Wedell then singled and Jonae Perez walked, setting up Torres' two-run double. Long Beach State capitalized on two Aggie errors to score another run in the fourth and then got an RBI single by Lacy Tyler for its final run in the sixth.
Johnson singled for UC Davis in the second and Tognetti singled in the fourth.
Cervenka had four strikeouts and a walk, improving her pitching record to 12-6. Hancock had nine strikeouts and walked just two while scattering eight hits.
UC Davis returns to action next Saturday when its hosts Cal State Northridge in a noon doubleheader. The teams will then play a single game the following day at noon.
