LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Davis ended the weekend in spectacular fashion both in the circle, and at the plate throughout Sunday’s series finale at LBSU Softball Complex by shutting out Long Beach State, last year’s NCAA Tournament participant, on its own diamond by a 5-0 score.

With that win, the Aggies will wrap up a six-game road swing — the only Big West team to play its first two conference series on the road — and will return to La Rue Field for Friday’s BWC home opener against Cal State Fullerton, the defending champions, with a 17-21 overall and 2-4 league record.

Long Beach State will continue its season with a 16-20-1 and 4-2 record.

Even though the Aggies did not record the result they wanted in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the last time Katie Kibby faced the 49ers, the freshman right-hander pitched like a seasoned veteran, and fell two pitches shy of picking up the win that afternoon. In Sunday’s series finale, the Vacaville native owned the circle and allowed only one hit to record a complete-game shutout victory.

That one hit was LBSU’s lone highlight of the afternoon.

Opening action with a lead-off single to center in the top of the first, Christa Castello scored the Aggies’ inaugural run of the day when Alexis Carney doubled down the left field line, which allowed her teammate to score from second base.

With Kibby retiring Long Beach batters in order (until the fifth when it recorded its only hit), UC Davis doubled its lead in the third when Maddie Rojas drove in Isabella Leon on her single to left field.

Leon originally reached base on a fielder’s choice.

But it was a three-run sixth that sealed the victory, an inning that saw seven Aggies take their cuts against two Long Beach pitchers.

Brianna Warner wrapped-up a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with a bunt single to kick-start UC Davis’ final scoring opportunity of the day. When Ashley Lotoszynski’s double landed in an empty patch of grass in center, that was all the opportunity one of the fastest baserunners in the Big West, and its stolen base leader, to round the bases to push her team’s lead to a 3-0 margin. Rojas, the very next batter, then belted a double of her own, which allowed Lotoszynski to score.

UC Davis took full advantage of a two-out throwing error by LBSU Nichole Fry; that miscue allowed Castello to reach base, and Rojas to plate the Aggies’ final run.

As was the case in five of the previous six innings, Kibby ended Sunday’s game by retiring Long Beach’s batters in order.
