DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis softball team couldn't recover from an early deficit, as Nikki Armagost tossed her second complete game shut out in as many days to help Pacific win the three-game Big West series with a 6-0 victory on Sunday at La Rue Field.
The Aggies were held scoreless after stranding seven runners on base for the game. The Tigers scored early and late, posting three runs in the first and two insurance runs in the seventh en route to the win. Pacific improved to 24-13 overall with a 4-2 conference record while UC Davis dropped to 18-16 and 3-3 in Big West play.
Alex Holmes and JJ Wagoner each tallied two hits but the Aggies had just five hits for the game. Nine separate Tigers registered hits, led by Amy Moore's two hits and RBI.
"We didn't play good defense today," said head coach Karen Yoder. "After you play a team two times, the third game is all about good defense. We did not convert enough outs. We had opportunities offensively we just didn't have timely hitting. We didn't do our job."
The Tigers started the game with a lead-off single from Megan Hom, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a walk that put two on with one out. UC Davis had two outs before a throwing error allowed both runners to score. Pacific continued to take advantage of the error with an RBI hit from Moore. The Aggies brought in Holmes to the circle in relief from there, as UC Davis got out of the inning with a 3-0 deficit.
The Aggies couldn't take advantage of several scoring opportunities, stranding two runners in the first, third and fifth innings. Holmes and Wagoner each singled to start the bottom of the first but the next three batters were retired in order.
Pacific added a single run in the top of the fourth after two hits in the inning. Lindsey Pierce had an RBI single to left field that put the Tigers on top 4-0.
Pacific continued with more offense in the top of the seventh, adding two insurance runs after four hits. All hits in the inning came on two outs, with Amanda Collier and Alexa Rivera recording RBI singles. Armagost had a one, two, three inning in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 6-0 win.
Armagost improved to 11-8 with the win after allowing five hits and striking out four. Jessica Thweatt took the loss for UC Davis and dropped to 6-4 after allowing three hits and three unearned runs.
The Aggies will be back in action next weekend, traveling to play a three-game series at Long Beach State, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 1 p.m.
