SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Davis only allowed three hits to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in Sunday’s Big West Conference series finale at Campus Diamond, unfortunately one of those hits was a home run - the only occasion either team scored throughout the day - as the Aggies dropped their second straight game by a 1-0 score.

UC Davis is now 17-21 with a 4-7 conference mark while UC Santa Barbara improves to 25-16 and 6-5.

Starters from both teams threw three scoreless innings until the Gauchos’ Shelby Wisdom hit a solo shot to left center to score the game’s only run. From there, both starters continued their pitchers’ duel throughout the final innings of the series finale.

Even though she picked up the loss, UC Davis starter Justine Vela threw an impressive game, fanning four batters against two walks, and allowed only three hits.

UC Davis’ most dangerous scoring opportunity took place in its half of the fourth inning prior to Wisdom’s hit.

Cat Guidry pinch ran for Kelly Schulze who drew a leadoff walk, eventually making her way to third base thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Christa Castello and a single from her sister, Christina Guidry.

But the Gauchos were able to prevent UC Davis from scoring, recording the third out of the frame to prevent Cat Guidry from covering that final 60 feet to record the initial run of the afternoon.

Castello, Cassandra Ginnis, Ch. Guidry, Jasmine Lee and JJ Wagoner were collectively responsible for all five Aggie hits recorded off Santa Barbara starter Alex Pingree.

UC Davis will end its split series against the Pacific Tigers, one that originally began with a doubleheader last week, on Wednesday, April 17, in a 2 p.m. conference game at La Rue Field.
