SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman Alyse Rojas finished 2-for-3 to log her team-best 17th multi-hit games of the year, but visiting UC Davis could not hold back host Cal Poly, which used a big third inning to post a 6-1 victory in the rubber game of their Big West Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 22-16 overall and 4-5 in league play, dropping their second consecutive conference series. The Mustangs, which capitalized on three UC Davis miscues in the field, improved to 19-19 overall and 3-6 in the Big West with the win.

Rojas’ performance was her 12th two-hit game of the season — and her fifth in her last nine games overall — with the second of her two singles on Sunday driving home Frankie Mendoza, who walked to lead off the inning, for her team’s only run of the day.

Isabella Leon, Mendoza, Meghan Bradbury, and Brooke Yanez, also logged hits for the Aggies, who stranded five runners on base, two in scoring position.

Cal Poly posted a run in the first to take the early lead, then broke the game open in the third, sending nine batters to the plate and taking advantage of a pair of errors to score four times — three of those unearned for a 5-1 lead.

A walk to Mendoza started the fifth for UC Davis and a ground ball moved her into scoring position for Rojas, who laced a single to center that was mishandled by the fielder, plating Mendoza from second to break up the shutout.

The Mustangs responded to get the run back in the home half after a single and error with one out put a runner at third for Amanda Sandoval, whose sacrifice fly brought home the final run of the game.

Yanez (12-7) allowed a run on two hits while walking two over only two innings of work in the loss before giving way to Katie Kibby in the third. Lindsey Chalmers (14-7) earned the win, allowing an unearned run on six hits and striking out two in the complete-game effort.

UC Davis returns to La Rue Field to open a four-game homestand on Saturday (April 21) with a doubleheader against Big West rival UC Riverside at 1 p.m.
