SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Aggie starter Justine Vela dominated Sunday’s Big West Conference series finale at Bob Janssen Field from start to finish as she allowed only four hits and struck out two during her seven innings in the circle, and she picked up her first complete-game shutout of the season thanks to Alexis Carney’s two-out single up the middle in the third inning, which lifted UC Davis to a 1-0 victory at Cal Poly.

The win not only snapped softball’s 12-game slide, but also pushed UC Davis’ record to 15-29 overall and 4-11 in league play. Cal Poly ends its weekend with records of 23-21 and 6-9.

With two outs already recorded in the Aggies’ half of the third, Brianna Warner hit a single to the shortstop, then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Now in scoring position, one of the, if not the fastest player in the league, sprinted home when Alexis Carney hit a single up the middle, which allowed Warner to score the only run of the day.

Trailing 1-0, Hyland reached on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher; Vela recorded the first out in the bottom of the fourth by retiring Amanda Sandoval, who originally reached base on a single through the middle of the diamond. After Cal Poly drew a walk, which pushed Hyland to scoring position, Vela singlehandedly ended her opponent’s most dangerous scoring opportunity off the game by striking out Courtney Tyler and Ashley Tornio swinging on consecutive at bats.

Even though Vela was nearly unhittable all afternoon long, her teammates stepped up on defense, when needed, to help keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard.

The only double play recorded by either team belonged to Kelly Zboralske; not only did the Aggies’ first baseman record the first out of the fifth inning by snaring Makenna Young’s line drive, she also picked off Betsy Colburn who was caught off the bag on the play.

That frame ended when Katie Robertson caught Chelsea Convissar stealing.

UC Davis will return to La Rue Field for its final homestand of the season, starting on Saturday, May 7, when UC Santa Barbara visits campus.
