LONG BEACH, Calif. – Competing in their second pitchers' duel of the weekend, UC Davis starter Justine Vela and Long Beach State’s Erin Jones-Wesley matched each other’s efforts throughout the first seven innings of Sunday’s series finale from the 49er Softball Complex, posting zeros across the scoreboard to force extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Long Beach State designated player Karli Sandoval was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force the only run of game across the plate; that play allowed the 49ers to down the Aggies in the series finale by a 1-0 score.
With Sunday’s result, UC Davis falls to 22-27 overall and 8-13 in Big West play while Long Beach improves to 35-20 and 17-7.
Both pitchers allowed five hits and finished their respective tenures in the circle with six strikeouts apiece.
The Aggies’ most dangerous scoring opportunity of the day took place in the fifth inning when Ch. Guidry reached base on a leadoff bunt single. Advancing to second on a sacrifice from her sister, Cat Guidry, Ch. Guidry took third when Lee earned her second hit of the day on a single to left field.
Unfortunately for UC Davis, the 49ers were able to record the final out of the frame to prevent Ch. Guidry from scoring what would have been the game-winning run based on the events that followed in the sixth and seventh innings.
UC Davis will return to action for its final series of the season starting with a doubleheader on Friday, May 10, against the Cal Poly Mustangs at La Rue Field.
