FULLERTON, Calif. - Kylie Fan had three hits, two RBIs and a run scored to help the UC Davis softball team score four runs in the final three innings and hang on for a 5-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the season finale on Saturday at Anderson Field.
The Aggies posted 10 hits on the day, led by Fan's three singles and a multi-hit game from Any Nunez. Justine Vela tossed a complete game and struck out 10 batters to record her 20th win of the season.
UC Davis finished the season with a 24-28 overall record and improved to 14-7 in Big West games. 14 conference wins is the most the Aggies have had since finishing with a 15-6 record and Big West title in 2010. The Titans dropped to 20-31 on the season with an 8-13 mark in league play.
UC Davis reached the scoreboard in the top of the first, posting two hits to take a quick 1-0 lead. Megan Guzman had a lead-off single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Fan provided a clutch two-out hit, recording a RBI with a single to center field.
Cal State Fullerton managed to answer in the bottom of the second, evening the score after a pair of hits. The Titans got started with a two-out rally on an Adriana Martinez single up the middle. After a stolen base, Ashley Carter took advantage with a RBI single to right center to make the score 1-1.
Cal State Fullerton took control of the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring another single run to go on top 2-1. A Martinez single and Carter RBI triple did the damage before Vela got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The Aggies responded with a steady offensive attack in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. JJ Wagoner and Nunez had back-to-back singles to start the fifth before UC Davis scored on sacrifice and fielding error. The Aggies used another Titan miscue to score in the sixth before Heather Zimmerman's RBI single to right field put UC Davis on top 4-2.
Cal State Fullerton added a single run in the bottom of the sixth but the Aggies bounced back with an insurance score to start the seventh. Kelly Harman had a lead-off double in the top of the seventh and came around to score on another Fan RBI single to center field, making the score 5-3.
Vela managed to close out the game, recording two more strikeouts to seal the win. She improved to 20-13 on the season after allowing 12 hits and three runs while striking out 10 for the game. Desiree Ybarra took the loss to drop to 13-17 after allowing 10 hits and four earned runs.
UC Davis had a seven game turnaround from last season's Big West schedule after finishing 7-14 in 2011. The Aggies also finished just out of contention for the Big West title this season.
