Aggies host ribbon cutting at renovated La Rue Field

March 5, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. — Supporters of the UC Davis softball program are invited to join Athletic Director Kevin Blue, Head Coach Erin Thorpe, and the student-athletes, at a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the newly redesigned La Rue Field on Tuesday, March 6, at 1:15 p.m.

The long-time home of the Aggies has undergone a dramatic facelift since October of 2017 as part of a multi-million dollar renovation partially funded through donations made to the Marya Welch Initiative for Women’s Athletics -- established to raise awareness and financial support for UC Davis' 14 NCAA women's sports. "We are very excited about the upgrades to La Rue Field," Thorpe said. "We have a tradition of success throughout the history of our program and, on this 50th anniversary season, we are so excited to see the fruits of the labor of all the wonderful women who have paved the way and laid the strong foundation for the UC Davis softball program. These facility improvements are a testament to all the student-athletes who have pulled on that Aggie jersey and represented the university with 'Aggie Pride.' "

The entire stadium has been razed along with the metal bleachers and dugouts, while the playing surface has been laser graded, new sod has been planted in the outfield, a new drainage system has been positioned around the field, and electrical conduit has been run to enable lights to be installed at the batting cages. The facility also includes a new team clubhouse and locker room built beyond the right field fence.

Other improvements to the stadium footprint include new dugouts for both the home and visitor sides with renovated bullpens, as well as a new concrete backstop with netting. New bleacher seating for approximately 300 fans has been installed behind home plate, featuring an open-air press box at the top, as well as an upgraded sound system and scoreboard that will enhance the fan experience. The entire field will be wrapped in updated graphics and branding in line with other home facilities, bringing a new level of "Aggie Pride."

Home of the Aggies since the late 1980's, La Rue Field was recognized as the "Softball Field of the Year" by the Sports Turf Managers Association in 1999 and has hosted six NCAA Division II West Region tournaments from 1994-02.

UC Davis will host its first event at its new home this weekend, welcoming four other schools to Northern California for the five-day, 13-game, Aggie Invitational beginning on Thursday (March 8) and running through Monday (March 12). Nevada, Northern Colorado, Utah State, and Valparaiso, will join the Aggies in the tournament, which opens with UC Davis taking on the Wolf Pack and Aggies beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.
