Softball Hosts Santa Clara On Thursday

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis softball team returns to action Thursday afternoon when it hosts Santa Clara in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 1 p.m. at La Rue Field. The action is part of a five-game week for the Aggies, who face East Carolina and No. 13 California twice over the weekend.

UC Davis (7-12) is coming off a 10-game stretch in which it played five ranked teams. The contests included No. 1 Washington and No. 3 Florida. Sarah Axelson leads UC Davis with a .382 batting average and ranks second in the Big West. The senior also leads the team with 12 runs and is tied for the team lead in RBIs (10) and home runs (2). Jessica Gonzalez is batting .310 while Elizabeth Santana and Alex Holmes are each hitting .302. Holmes leads the team in the circle with five wins and a Big West-leading 61 strikeouts.

Santa Clara enters Thursday with a 2-7 record. The Broncos most recently defeated Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge on Saturday after starting the season 0-7.

UC Davis will take on East Carolina Saturday in Berkeley before concluding the weekend with a doubleheader at Cal on Sunday.
