DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis freshman pitcher Justine Vela has been named to the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pacific All-Region Second Team, adding to her Big West postseason honors, it was announced on Thursday by the NFCA.
The All-Region teams are selected by NFCA member coaches from each region. First Team honorees are are now eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
Vela, a Bakersfield native, received Big West Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the year recognition to be added to the NFCA plaudit on Thursday. She put up record-breaking marks in the circle this season for the Aggies, making program and Big West history books. Vela led the league with 272 strikeouts for the season while holding her opponents to a .206 batting average. The freshman’s phenomenal numbers in the circle put her fifth in all-time Big West single-season records as well as No. 15 in the nation for her 2012 season strikeouts.
A total of 263 players representing 129 different institutions comprise this season’s regional teams, including first and second teams for each region.
