DAVIS, Calif. - Cal St. Bakersfield pitcher Erin Kelly tossed a four-hit
shutout against top-seeded UC Davis on Saturday afternoon, sparking the
Roadrunners to a 2-0 victory over the Aggies and sending the fourth-seeded
Roadrunners into Sunday's championship game against fifth-seeded Chico State.
UC Davis, which eliminated Western New Mexico earlier in the day, finished
its season 41-13, eclipsing the 40-win plateau for the seventh time in the
past eight years. The Aggies were also making their 10th straight NCAA Tournament
appearance and were hosting the regional for the second straight year.
The Roadrunners - forced to play the elimination game against UC Davis
after losing to Chico State earlier - are 38-24. Both Chico and Bakersfield
have one loss each, making the championship game at noon on Sunday a winner-take-all
matchup.
The Roadrunners earned their way into the final on the arm of Kelly,
who scattered just four hits, walked only two and struck out three after
suffering the loss against the Wildcats. She improved her record to 26-12.
"We wanted to jump on them early but it didn't happen," said
UC Davis Coach Kathy DeYoung. "I have to give Erin Kelly credit. To
come back after that (loss) and throw like that, she did a good job."
The Roadrunners scored the game's only runs in the second inning. Maigan
Salimino's single to center scored Allison Amezcua - who opened the inning
with a double to center off Aggies starter Susan Churchwell - and Salimino
later scored on Tracy Szobonya's infield single.
Meanwhile, Kelly pitching a strong game and holding the Aggies' offense
in check. She allowed two baserunners in the first but no more than one
after that, facing just two batters over the minimum 15 over the final five
innings and only giving up two three hits after that first.
Seniors Jenny Hall and Shyamala White each had singles in their final
games for UC Davis, while Shelly Malbon and Jennifer Borrelli also had hits.
Catcher Tara Licuanan had a pair of hits for Bakersfield, while Kristie
Smith had the remaining Roadrunners hit.
UC Davis finished the season with its second straight California Collegiate
Athletic Association championship and its third league title in four years.
