2010 UC Davis Softball Schedule
DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis softball program has announced its 2010 schedule, and it features plenty of games against some of the top teams in the nation as well as the traditional 21-game Big West Conference slate. In all, the Aggies will play 25 games against teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament including both finalists of the Women's College World Series.
UC Davis will take part in five tournaments prior to starting Big West play. The first takes place at the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic. Additional tournaments include the UCLA Stacey Winsberg Memorial Tournament, the Cathedral City Classic and the DeMarini Invitational. The final regular season tournament will be the Aggie Stampede, which will be hosted by UC Davis at La Rue Field March 26-28. Visiting schools include California, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's and UC Riverside.
The Aggies' home schedule begins Feb. 16 with a doubleheader against Sacramento State. Eight days later, UC Davis hosts Santa Clara. The next home game is scheduled for March 15 against Iona. That contest begins a six-game homestand that also features games against Stanford, San Jose State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's and California. The remaining nine home games are made up of three-game Big West series against Long Beach State (April 17-18), UC Riverside (May 1-2) and UC Santa Barbara (May 14-15).
The overall slate features 10 games against teams that finished No. 18 or better in the final USA Today/NFCA Top-25 poll last spring. The first such game is Feb. 20 when the Aggies play at UCLA. On Feb. 28, UC Davis concludes the Cathedral City Classic against Northwestern and defending national champion Washington. UC Davis will play single games at Cal twice and host the Bears another time. They will also take on Northwestern a second time on March 6 at the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton. The Aggies conclude the tournament the next day against Florida, which lost to Washington in the championship of last year's WCWS. The non-conference schedule also features two games against Stanford.
UC Davis returns its top two hitters from a year ago in the form of
Kelly Harman and
Alex Holmes. Harman batted .295 on her way to being named the Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year. Holmes, who was a first-team All-Big West selection as a designated player, batted .275 as a sophomore. Holmes was also an honorable mention as a pitcher after posting a 1.83 ERA in the circle.
The Aggies are currently in the midst of a six-game fall schedule. They are next in action Oct. 25 when they face Sacramento State and California in Berkeley. The fall slate concludes Nov. 8 with a doubleheader at home against Sacramento City College at La Rue Field. UC Davis will also be sponsoring a canned food drive that day.
