DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis softball team has signed five future Aggies to National Letters of Intent, announced head coach Karen Yoder. They include Mariah Bagsic, Felicia Baldwin, Kasie Cochran, Amy Nunez and Chandler Wagner. All five bring into the program a high level of success on and off the field.
"As a whole, this recruiting class brings a different dimension to the current squad adding depth in a variety of positions but also maintaining the consistent dedication to being the best student in the classroom," said Yoder. "I am confident this class will blend perfectly with our current players and continue our pursuit of excellence."
Bagsic batted .429 as a junior with a .619 slugging percentage and a .484 on base percentage. She finished with 36 hits in 84 at bats and delivered six doubles, two triples and two home runs. She was a First-Team All-Valley League selection and led her team in batting and on base percentage. Bagsic was also a Scholar Athlete and was named to the Union Tribune All-Academic Team. As a junior, she was the defensive most valuable player for her team while batting .337. She has helped lead Westview to back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in the San Diego Section playoffs.
"Mariah has tremendous field presence that is captivating and will add tremendous spark to the squad," said Yoder. "I am looking forward to her bringing that passion and enthusiasm to the Aggies."
Baldwin enters her senior season after already receiving multiple Central Coast Section post-season honors. She has been named First-Team All-CCS as well as Second-Team as a freshman. She has twice helped lead her team to the CCS playoffs. Baldwin is a multi-sport athlete who also stars on Mountain View's soccer team.
"Felicia has huge potential within the Aggie program," said Yoder. "Her athleticism has been magnified by her ability to contribute in multiple positions, and I am enthusiastic about her upside as a player."
Cochran was a Second-Team All-Moore League selection last year as a junior. She batted .329 and also received the Coach's Award. She helped lead Wilson to a second-place finish in the league. Cochran is a three-time Distinguished Scholar selection.
"Kasie has a great desire to make a positive influence as an Aggie, not only in the classroom but on the field as well," said Yoder. "I am excited to see her expand on her versatility as a player."
Nunez has helped lead the Monarchs to 20 or more wins in each of the past two seasons. During that time, Mater Dei has posted identical 6-2 records in the Trinity League.
"Amy is a powerful athlete who will impact our infield at first base and will be an explosive contributor in the line up with her potential to supply power at the plate," said Yoder.
Wagner helped lead her team to a Southern Section championship as a junior. She played all 31 games at shortstop as the Titans posted a 27-4 overall record. She batted .250 as a junior with a .321 on base percentage. The Titans earned a No. 10 ranking in the state last season. Wagner is a four-time Scholar Athlete and received her school's individual award for outstanding community service as a sophomore. Her ASA team, the So Cal Athletics, placed fourth over the summer at the 18 Gold Nationals.
"Chandler brings a wealth of high-achieving experience, not only in the ASA but also in CIF, that will give her the direction to be an influential player the moment she becomes an Aggie," said Yoder.
UC Davis recently completed its fall schedule and will begin the 2010 season Feb. 12 at the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic.
