PORTLAND, Ore. -- After the first official weekend of competition play for the 2018 season, the UC Davis women's tennis team carries a 2-0 overall record thanks to their win over Portland State on Saturday, and then their win over Portland on Sunday, which took place at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center in Portland, Ore.
In the doubles portion of the dual match, Aggie duo Kristy Jorgensen and Kelsie Bryant secured the first of two needed wins after defeating Portland's Jelena Lukic and Raphaelle LeBlanc, 6-3; however, the Pilots pushed through to get a doubles win over Nikita Pradeep and Isabella von Ebbe. In the tiebreaker, UC Davis tandem Lani-Rae Green and Kristina Breisacher secured the doubles point for the Aggies by getting a 6-3 win over partners Loudres Ramalle and Nina Nikitovic.
The Aggies' 1-0 lead was short-lived as Portland's Radina Dimitrova made it a 1-1 game after defeating Breisacher, but Green defeated her opponent in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4, to get UC Davis's score ahead again. The Pilots scored one more point to tie up the game again before the Aggies widened the gap once and for all by scoring the next three points to make it a final 5-2 game.
The first of those three UC Davis points came from freshman Sara Tsukamoto, who got a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-4, over Emily Soares in her first complete match played at the Division I level. Pradeep followed through in getting the second point for the Aggies after her performance in the third set to secure her victory against Loudres Ramalle, while von Ebbe, who bettered her opponent in the third set, added another point to bump UC Davis's final score to five.
The UC Davis women's tennis team returns to the courts next Saturday (Jan. 27) to welcome Santa Clara's team to the Marya Welch Tennis Center, starting at noon.
