BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UC Davis opened its 2004 women's tennis season in victorious fashion as the Aggies jumped out early then cruised to the 8-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield Sunday at the Sally Ann Silva Tennis Center. The match was the season- and California Collegiate Athletic Association-opener for both teams.

The Aggies opened the day by sweeping all three doubles matches by identical 8-1 scores.

In singles play, the Aggies won five of six matches in straight sets. The lone Bakersfield win came at No.1 singles where defending CCAA Player of the Year Katalin Nagy earned a tough straight-set win over sophomore Ally Muller. On serve at 2-2 in the first set, Muller had the first momentum swing as she broke Nagy to go up 3-2. Leading 5-3 in the first set, Muller had her only set point, but Nagy saved the game then broke right back to even the set at 5-5.

In the tiebreaker, Nagy rallied for the final three points to take the first-set 7-6 (7-5). Nagy then broke Muller to open the second set and held serve the rest of the way for the 7-6, 6-3 victory.

Junior Nancy Mok earned at 6-0, 6-3 win at No.2 singles over Leah Espericueta while senior Jennifer Fong struggled early before closing out a 6-4, 6-0 win over Glenda Love at No.3.

Freshman Yuka Otaka had little trouble with Marti Hoyt at No.4, winning 6-2, 6-1 and sophomore Audrey Wingo lost just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 win over Shanna Kwock at No.5. Senior Luna Tieu did not drop a game as she defeated Charlotte Fairbrother 6-0, 6-0 at No.6 singles.

"It's nice to get a win under our belts, even more so since it was a CCAA opponent," said Aggie head coach Bill Maze. "Our doubles play got us off to a good start and that rolled right into the singles matches." UC Davis is next in action on Friday when it hosts Sonoma State at Hickey Courts.
