Aggies break victory streak at San Diego State

Feb. 3, 2018

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The UC Davis women’s tennis team saw an end to their season victory streak after a close-scoring match between San Diego State on Saturday morning at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aggies now carry a 3-1 overall record going into their next dual.

This is the first match in the 2018 season where the Aggies did not acquire the doubles point lead going into singles play. Unfortunately, the Aztecs won all three of the doubles matches that day, leaving UC Davis with a temporary 1-0 disadvantage.

Despite not winning the doubles point, as well as the first two singles match victories with seniors Lani-Rae Green and Kristy Jorgensen, Aggie sophomore Kristina Breisacher pushed through to get her team their first point with a straight-set singles win over Magda Aubets, 6-2, 6-4.

After Breisacher’s singles win, the Aztecs still had the upper hand with a 3-1 lead over UC Davis; however, the Aggies fought through and responded with two back-to-back singles victories over their Aztec opponents, thanks to sophomore Nikita Pradeep and freshman Sara Tsukamoto.

Prior to Tsukamoto’s singles victory, the Kailua, Hawai’i, native, went back and forth with her lead, starting off with a 1-5 disadvantage, then bringing the match up to a 5-5 tie. She fell once more to a 5-6 score San Diego State’s Nnena Nadozie, but finalized the match once and for all by winning the tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(2). The match now became an exciting 3-3 tie, and there was one singles match yet to be finished.

The last unfinished game of the day was between UC Davis junior Isabella von Ebbe and San Diego State’s Abbie Mulbarger, but the latter of the two clinched the win, bringing the Aztecs to their fourth team point. Although San Diego State won the match, von Ebbe gave Mulbarger did not go down easy as she pushed her in the tiebreaker for each set played between them, 7-6(3), 7-6(1).

The Aggies return to action tomorrow morning to go up against UC San Diego’s team, starting with doubles play at 11 a.m.
