DAVIS, Calif. - No.41 Sacramento State won the opening doubles point then swept all six singles matches in straight sets as the Hornets posted a 7-0 victory over UC Davis Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 1-3 on the season while the Hornets improve to 3-2.
Play began with the Hornets taking all three doubles matches. At No.1 the duo of Margarita Karnaukhova and Anna Karaveyeva earned an 8-4 win over Ally Muller and Robin Guier while Anna Erikson and Klara Petersson defeated Audrey Wingo and Kaitlin Callan, 8-1. At No.3, it was another 8-1 match as Cecilia Helland and Roberta Fessenko defeated Amanda Wise and Ashley Lehman.
In singles play, the Hornets won each of the top four matches by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores. At No.1, Karnaukhova, the 17th-ranked player in the nation, defeated Muller while No.61 Erikson got by Guier at No.2. In the third spot, Fessenko defeated Wingo with Petersson cruising past Callan.
At No.5 Aggie sophomore Yuka Otaka challenged Karaveyeva before being broken and dropping the first set 6-4. Karaveyeva then closed out the match 6-1 in the second set. Helland earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wise at No.6.
"It was a pretty impressive victory by the Hornets," said Aggie head coach Bill Maze. "They are a very tough team."
UC Davis is next in action on Saturday when it heads south to face San Diego State.
