DAVIS, Calif. - No.60 Long Beach State captured five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over UC Davis in a women's tennis match Friday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 1-5 while the 49ers improve to 3-2.
Due to the threat of rain, the day began with singles as Long Beach State clinched the win in the first five matches. No.4 Sandra Rocha defeated Kaitlin Callan 6-0, 6-1 and No.5 Rachael Porsz defeated Yuka Otaka 6-1, 6-0 as the 49ers jumped to a 2-0 lead. Nicoletta Ratiu made it 3-0 with a win over Amanda Wise, 6-2, 6-0, at No.6.
UC Davis captured its lone win of the afternoon at No.2, where freshman Robin Guier won a first-set tiebreaker en route to the 7-6, 6-3 win over Alanah Carroll.
In doubles play, Porsz and Ratiu defeated Wingo and Ashley Lehman, 8-0 at No.3 while Bouffler and Rocha escaped with an 8-6 win over Muller and Guier at No.1 The final match of the day went to the 49er pair of Carroll and Benson as they got past Wise and Laura Tidik, 8-4.
"We competed well," said Aggie head coach Bill Maze. "One of our goals this season was to let our future Big West opponents know we are going to be a formidable team and although the score was not what we wanted, I think we accomplished that goal today.
"Robin played really well today," Maze continued. "She has great fundamentals and played pretty much an error-free match."
UC Davis is next in action on Saturday when it hosts UC Riverside at 11 a.m.
