DAVIS, Calif. - The University of Hawaii took five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over host UC Davis in a women's tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 1-6 on the season.
Hawaii captured the opening doubles point by taking two of the three matches. The Rainbows won at No.2 when Justine Booutet and Sylvia Jaros defeated Amanda Wise and Laura Tidik, 8-1 then clinched the point as Kimberly Curtis and Chloe Bihag rallied from a 1-4 deficit to defeat Audrey Wingo and Ashley Lehman, 8-5. The Aggies salvaged one match as the No.1 duo of Ally Muller and Robin Guier captured a tiebreaker to pull out a 9-8 win over Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor.
In singles action Hawaii won at the top five positions to clinch the match. UC Davis earned its only win when Yuka Otaka defeated Kana Aikawa 6-1, 6-0 at No.6.
At No.1, Fitzgerald defeated Muller 6-1, 6-2 while Jaros needed a second-set tiebreaker to pull out a 6-4, 7-6 win over Guier. Booutet posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Wingo at No.3 and Mainor dropped her first set 6-0 to Kaitlin Callan before rallying for the 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No.4. Curtis picked up the other Hawaii victory as she defeated Wise, 6-3, 6-4.
"Hawaii is a really good team," said Aggie head coach Bill Maze. "They were a good serving team and a team of good fighters. I was particularly impressed with their No.1 player (Lauren Fitzgerald). She was very solid and it was tough for Ally to find holes in her game.
UC Davis is next in action on Friday when it visits San Jose State in Los Gatos. Matchtime is set for 2 p.m.
