DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis ran its winning streak to four with a 6-3 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's tennis match Sunday afternoon at Hickey Courts.
With the win the Aggies improve to 4-2 on the season, 2-0 in CCAA play.
The day began with UC Davis capturing two of three doubles matches as Gretchen Schantz and Ally Muller at No. 2 easily defeated Yuri Sawai and Lydia Sanchez, 8-0. At No.3 the Aggies had little trouble as Jennifer Fong and Christy Battig defeated Brenda Knick and Pamela Tivnon, 8-0. Bakersfield came away with a hard-fought, 9-8 (7-5) victory at No. 1 doubles when Katalin Nagy and Julie Ikonnikova defeated the Aggie duo of Janice Salomon and Nancy Mok.
With UC Davis holding a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, the Roadrunner quickly cut the deficit in half as Muller suffered an ankle injury during her warmup at No.2 singles against Ikonnikova. She would be unable to start the match, awarding Bakersfield with the point due to an injury default. Muller's teammates picked her up as the depth of the Aggie squad was too much for the Roadrunners. UC Davis would win in straight sets at No.'s 3-6, surrendering a total of two games in those four matches, clinching the victory. Nagy would finish the match scoring Bakersfield's only other point after defeating Salomon, 6-2, 6-3.
"Bakersfield was tough at the top of their lineup, as we expected, but our depth came through and that's where we beat them," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze. "We have now won four in a row and I think that has given our players a lot of confidence."
The Aggies return to CCAA play next weekend when they host Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday. Matchtime is set for 10am.
