Los Gatos, Calif. - UC Davis captured four of six singles matches as it snapped a four-game losing streak witha 5-2 victory over San Jose State in a women's tennis match Friday afternoon.
With the win the Aggies improve to 2-6 on the season while the Spartans fall to 1-4.
The day opened with UC Davis winning two of three doubles matches to take the opening point. Ally Muller and Robin Guier posted a 9-7 win over Elke Harms and Ashley Tavita at No.1 while Audrey Wingo and Ashley Lehman captured a 9-8 victory over June Lee and Stephanie Irwin at No.3. At No.2 doubles, the Spartan pair of Kathy Vana nd Courtney Koenigsfeld defeated Amanda Wise and Laura Tidik, 8-3.
The Aggies came out in singles and won four matches to clinch the victory, three coming in straight sets. At No.1 Muller won a close first set before pulling away for the 7-5, 6-0 win over Harms. That win gave the Aggies the clinching point for the match. Meanwhile, Guier put togetgher two solid sets in a 6-4, 6-2 win over Koenigsfeld at No.2.
Yuka Otaka won 6-2, 6-2 over Irwin at No.6 for her second straight win while the Aggies picked up their other victory at No.3 as Wingo played three quality sets of tennis for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Van.
San Jose State picked up its two wins at No.4 when Lee defeated Kaitlin Callen, 6-0, 6-2, and Tavita defeated Wise at No.5, 6-0, 6-1.
"The team played well and we knew it would be a close match," siad Aggie head coach Bill Maze. "We felt good about winning the doubles point, it was the first time all year we had done so and it gave us confidence going into singles."
UC Davis is next in action on March 5, when it hosts Santa Clara.
