Saint Mary's Rallies In Singles To Defeat UC Davis, 5-2

MORAGA, Calif. - UC Davis captured the opening doubles point but it could not sustain the momentum in singles as Saint Mary's rallied for a 5-2 victory over the Aggies Friday afternoon at the Korth Tennis Complex.

With the loss the Aggies snap their three-match winning streak and fall to 6-4 on the season. Saint Mary's improves its record to 3-9.

In doubles action the Aggies came out strong to take two of three matches. Ally Muller and Nancy Mok won their fifth-straight match following an 8-3 win over Aude Lambert and Nicole Hunstock at the No.1 position. Saint Mary's Kristin Kummer and Kate Harden made it a match each with an 8-6 win over Amanda Wise and Ashley Lehman at No.3 The deciding match came at No.2 where the Aggie duo of Jennifer Fong and Christy Battig pulled out a tiebreaker win over Megan Shulman and Dunya Stankovic, 9-8 (8-6). It marked the third time in five Division I matches this season the Aggies had captured the doubles point.

In singles play it was all Gaels. Saint Mary's captured five of six matches to clinch the victory. The Aggies managed to get one win at No.6 singles when Luna Tieu posted a straight-set win over Anne-Joe de Graan, 7-5, 6-4. At No.4, Aggie freshman Yuka Otaka rallied from a set down against Kummer but could not complete the comeback as Kummer pulled out a third-set tiebreaker for the 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) win.

The remaining four matches were won by Saint Mary's in straight sets. Lambert posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No.1 over Muller while Harden defeated Mok 6-2, 6-2, at No.2. Schulman easily won the first then held on for a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Fong at No.3 with Hunstock recording a 6-1, 6-2 win over Audrey Wingo at No.5.

 

 

UC Davis will next be in action on Monday when it hosts Weber State in a non-conference match at Hickey Courts. Matchtime is set for 2 p.m.
