DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis swept the three opening doubles matches then held on in singles for a 5-4 win over visiting Weber State Monday afternoon at Hickey Courts.

With the win the Aggies improve to 7-4 on the season. Weber State falls to 6-6 overall.

The day began with the Aggies taking the three doubles points. Amanda Wise and Ashley Lehman started things off with an 8-3 win over Elana Smit and Kate Ennenga, 8-3, at No.3 followed by Jennifer Fong and Christy Battig's 8-4 win over Robi Marcu and Alex Ilie at No.2. The Aggies' top duo of Ally Muller and Nancy Mok closed out the sweep with a 9-7 win over Brianna Beauchene and Chelsee Drews at No.1.

In singles play the Aggies quickly closed to within one point of victory when Mok posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ilie at No.2. The Wildcats earned their first point when Smit defeated Fong, 6-2, 6-1, at No.3. UC Davis then clinched the match when No.5 Audrey Wingo defeated Drews, 6-4, 6-3.

The three remaining matches on court all went to Weber State. Pretorious earned a hard-fought, 7-5, 6-4 win over Aggie Luna Tieu at No.6 while Marcu grabbed a straight-set win over Muller at No.1, 7-6, 6-0. In the only match of the day to go three sets, Beauchene captured a 10-2 match tiebreaker to defeat Yuka Otaka, 6-2, 2-6, (10-2).

"Thank goodness for Division II scoring," said Aggie head coach Bill Maze, referring to the method of counting all three doubles points rather than Division I's format of 1 point to the team winning two matches. "The 3-0 lead in hindsight was huge. The heart of this team continues to impress me. We have been in a lot of close matches and been able to pull them out. Today was no different."

UC Davis is now off until March 29 when it begins a three-match southern California trip at UC San Diego.
