FULLERTON, Calif. – By winning two of three doubles matches and five of six singles contests, UC Davis kept its perfect record against Cal State Fullerton intact by defeating the Titans 6-1 at Titan Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon.
Since joining the Big West Conference, UC Davis has defeated Cal State Fullerton in every head-to-head dual match played.
With the win, the Aggies improve their overall record to 6-8 and are 2-1 against Big West opposition, Cal State Fullerton falls to 8-9 and 2-4 with the loss.
UC Davis captured the doubles point with an 8-5 win earned by Ellie Edles and Tiffany Pham over Tifany Mai and Monica Rodriguez, the final match to finish in the doubles round. Megan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa were the first to finish, earning an 8-2 victory over Rebekkah Ermaca and Megan Sandford.
Victories earned in the doubles round were just a precursor for what took place throughout the singles round as Edles, Heneghan and Kobayakawa all earned respective sweeps at Fullerton.
At the No. 1 position Heneghan defeated Tiffany Mai 6-1, 6-3, with Edles also earning a straight set victory with her 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Megan Sandford.
Even though Kobayakawa dropped the first set 4-6, the junior rebounded to take set two 6-4, capping her comeback with a 1-0 (10-8) third set win to record the final team point for UC Davis.
Also defeating her Titan opponent in straight sets was Lauren Curry; she handed Rodriguez her second loss of the afternoon by a 6-3, 7-5 score.
Tiffany Pham earned a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set singles victory in her exhibition match; teammate Zoe Davidson also defeated Fullerton’s Devyn Billingsley in her exhibition contest by the exact same score.
The Aggies have split their first two matches during their Big West road trip through Southern California and have an opportunity to return to Davis with a winning weekend record if victorious at Cal State Northridge Sunday afternoon. Action from the Matador Tennis Complex will start at 12:30 p.m.
