PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Portland captured all six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to come away with a 7-0 victory over UC Davis in a women's non-conference tennis match played indoors at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 5-7 on the season as they drop the opener of a three-match trip through the Northwest.
The day started with the Pilots capturing the top two doubles matches for the opening doubles point. The Aggie duo of Janice Salomon and Nancy Mok were defeated by Amy Juppenlatz and Sanja Indic, 8-0, at No. 1 while Kaori Tanabe and Alyson Tyson defeated the Aggies' No.2 team of Gretchen Schantz and Ally Muller, 8-3. UC Davis' lone victory of the day came at No.3 where Jennifer Fong and Christy Battig defeated Deirdre Ring-Marrinson and Kellee Menke, 8-6.
In singles play, the Pilots took five of the six matches in straight sets. Fong at No.5 captured her opening set against Menke, 6-1, but Menke rallied to win the second 6-1, and then took the super tiebreaker, 10-7, for the win. The super tiebreaker was played in place of a third set.
"We knew going in it was going to be a tough match," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze. "Portland is a quality team and they played well today. I do think matches like this are going to help us when we finish up our season against conference opponents."
UC Davis continues its three-match roadswing with a Saturday meeting at Linfield College. Matchtime is set for 1pm.
