DAVIS, Calif. - Cal Poly captured the opening doubles point then took four singles matches on its way to a 5-2 victory over UC Davis in a women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 4-9 on the season.
Cal Poly opened the day by taking all three doubles matches to take the opening point. Nicole Shabaz and Samantha Waller escaped with an 8-6 win over Ally Muller and Robin Guier at No.1 while Noelle Lee and Chelsy Thompson posted an 8-3 win over Kaitlin Callan and Amanda Wise at No.2. At No.3, the Aggie pair of Audrey Wingo and Ashley Lehman opened the match with a service break, but it was all Mustangs after that as Paige Billingsley and Carol Erickson recorded an 8-4 win.
In singles play the Aggies picked up two wins as Muller defeated Thompson, 4-6, 7-5, (10-5) at No.1. With the team victory already decided, the two played a super tiebreaker for the third set. UC Davis earned its other victory at No.6 where Wise defeated Falon Lopez, 6-4, 6-2.
The Mustangs captured straight-set victories in the other four matches. Lee defeated Guier, 6-4, 6-2 at No.2, Erickson handled Wingo, 6-3, 6-2 at No.3 and Shabaz defeated Callan, 6-3, 6-4 at No.4. At No.5 singles, Cal Poly's Sheila Lewis defeated Yuka Otaka, 6-3, 6-2.
UC Davis is next in action on Sunday when it travels to Moraga to face Saint Mary's.
