SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After dropping the opening point of the match, Santa Clara swept all six singles matches as it defeated UC Davis 6-1 this afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 9-6 this season while Santa Clara improves to 9-8.
UC Davis scored the match's first point of the afternoon by clinching the doubles point. After taking court three, Ally Muller and Nancy Mok paired at the top doubles slot for a tiebreaker win over Broncos Janalle Kaloi and Catherine Cochrane. Amanda Wise and Ashley Lehman recorded an 8-6 win over Casey Knutson and Jessie Strunk for the first Aggie victory. Erika Barnes and Kelly Leathers avoided the sweep with an 8-2 over Jennifer Fong and Christy Battig.
The Broncos went on two sweep all six singles matches. Knutson defeated Fong at No.3 while Kimberly Daniel defeated Yuka Otaka at No.5 to put the Broncos ahead 2-1. Cochrane then needed a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Mok at No.2, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) before Kaloi clinched the team victory with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Muller at the top singles slot. Leathers rallied after dropping the first set to Audrey Wingo at No.4 to 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 while Erika Barnes needed a match tiebreaker to defeat Luna Tieu at No.6, 3-6, 7-5, (10-8).
UC Davis will next be in action on Sunday when it hosts UC Santa Cruz at Hickey Courts at noon.
