DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Ally Muller captured a three-set victory at No.3 singles but it proved to be the only Aggie win as No.14 Hawaii Pacific defeated No.19 UC Davis, 8-1, in a non-conference women's tennis match Monday afternoon at Hickey Courts.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 7-10 on the season.
The Sea Warriors came out strong and captured the opening three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. It marked the first time this season the Aggies had been swept in doubles by a Division II opponent.
In singles play, Muller captured her opening set against Dada Joksimovic, dropped the second, then rebounded with a solid third to earn the 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory for the Aggies lone point. Nancy Mok at No.4 extended her opponent to three sets but could not overcome Bianca Barreto as the Sea Warrior senior won 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
"Talent-wise I think we were very even with them, but they were tougher than us today," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze. "I didn't think we played well in doubles and it's tough to come back from an 0-3 hole. We worked hard in singles and Ally had a great win. I felt we were right there but just couldn't get it done."
The Aggies will next be in action on Saturday when they face Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz.
