DAVIS, Calif. - Less than 24 hours after opening its homestand against Long Beach State, UC Davis returned to the Marya Welch Tennis Center Saturday morning to face the UC Riverside Highlanders, a team the Aggies swiftly defeated by a 6-1 score.
UC Davis improves to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play, UC Riverside slips to 1-12 and 0-6 with the day's result.
For the first time this season, UC Davis swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point that was up for grabs.
In addition to Nicole Koehly and Layla Sanders defeating Jamie and Taylor Raney 8-5 at the No. 1 position, UC Davis' No. 2 in Megan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa, and No. 3 pairing consisting of Lauren Curry and Ellie Edles each won their match by identical 8-3 scores.
Natalie McKay and Courtney Pattugalan represented UC Riverside as its No. 2 with teammates Kat Saltarelli and Kate Bergeson completing the Highlanders' doubles lineup.
For Heneghan and Kobayakawa, the win was their third in the last four matches played as an Aggie pairing, earning their inaugural victory as doubles partners were Edles and Curry.
In the round of singles action, the Aggies captured five of the six available points to earn their third conference victory of the season and first at the Marya Welch Tennis Center since defeating Cal Poly in their conference opener last month.
Since defeating the Mustangs on March 2, UC Davis competed in five consecutive road matches before hosting just its third home match of the year against Long Beach State.
Recording straight set singles victory Saturday morning were Sanders, who defeated J. Rainey 6-1, 6-1, Kobayakawa, who downed Saltarelli 6-3, 6-2, Koehly, who earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pattugalan and Pham who only dropped one game (6-1, 6-0) against Bergeson.
Edles split the first two sets of her matchup against McKay; following a 6-4 first set score, she fell 3-6 in the following frame. With the overall result of the day's action officially recorded by the time their third set commenced, a tiebreaker was utilized to determine an official winner - one that ended in Edles favor by an 11-9 margin.
Additional singles action also saw UC Davis' Zoe Davidson post matching 6-3 set scores to defeat Doan, and Jaramishian handing Andra her second loss of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 singles victory in exhibition play.
UC Davis will return to the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Monday, April 8, to face the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine in another Big West event. Moved from its original April 4 date because of rain, Monday's match will start at 1:30 p.m.
