Aggies Drop Both Ends Of A Saturday Doubleheader In Southern California

IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore Yuka Otaka provided the lone singles victory for UC Davis as the UC Riverside Highlanders won their second straight match with a 6-1 win over UC Davis in a non-conference women's tennis match Saturday morning. The match was a make-up of a rain out last month.

The Highlanders took the opening doubles point by claiming two of three matches. Casey Cross and H.R. Espiritu defated Ally Muller and Robin Guier, 8-4 at the top spot while Michelle Beyronneau and Eri Yoshimoto posted an 8-2 win in their victory over Amanda Wise and Kaitlin Callan at No.2. The Aggies won at No.3 when Audrey Wingo and Ashley Lehman defeated Catrisha Cabanilla and Colette Chau, 8-3.

In singles action Otaka was the only Aggie victor, defeating Yoshimoto 6-2, -76 at No.5. UCR came away with wins in the other five matches to clinch the victory, with Beyronneau's 4-6, 6-4, (10-6) win over Muller at No.1 the only match to go beyond two sets.

Later in the day, UC Irvine rode the momentum from the opening doubles point to a 7-0 victory over the Aggies at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.

With the two losses the Aggies fall to 4-13 on the season.

The Anteaters swept the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Anna Bentzer and Inna Agababian defeated Wise and Callan 8-1 at No.1 while Hui Leow and Becky Bernhard defeated Lehman and Wingo 8-3 at No.2. At No.3, Izabela Mijic and Jessica Broadfoot defeated Otaka and Cindy Kitch 8-1.

In singles, Bentzer defeated Wingo 6-1, 6-0 in the top spot then Agababian beat Wise 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, pushing the Anteater lead to 3-0. Leow clinched the win for UCI at No.3 as she defeated Otaka 6-3, 6-1. Mijic defeated Callan 6-1, 6-2 at No.2 with Bernhard beating Lehman 6-1, 6-1 at No.5 and Natalie Jacobs completing the sweep in defeating Kitch 7-5, 4-6, (10-5) at No. 6.

 

 

The Aggies are next in action on Sunday morning at Cal State Fullerton.
