PHOENIX, Ariz. - UC Davis took two of the opening three doubles matches then Jennifer Fong at No.6 singles clinched the victory with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Liza Wilbert as UC Davis defeated Grand Canyon, 6-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's tennis match Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Aggies improve to 8-10 on the season, 5-2 in CCAA play.
The Aggies came out strong by jumping to a 2-1 lead following doubles. Gretchen Schantz and Ally Muller combined for an 8-3 victory at No.2 doubles over Shawna Young and Karen Cervantez. Fong and Christy Battig then put UC Davis up 2-1 with an 8-1 win over Sarah Mitchell and Denia Combs at No.3.
In singles play, the Antelopes captured wins at the top two positions before the Aggie depth came through with victories in the remaining four matches. Muller, Battig Fong and Nancy Mok all won in straight sets with Fong earning the clinching victory at No.6.
"Mentally is was good to be ahead after doubles," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze. "Our depth came through for us again today and we rely on that. It was hot today and to play in those conditions was good as it will help prepare us for the conference tournament where the weather can be very warm.
"We're happy to get back in the win column and now we are looking forward to Sunday's match against Cal State L.A."
The Aggies will next be in action on Sunday when they conclude the CCAA regular season with a match at Cal State L.A.
