LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No.19 UC Davis captured the opening three doubles matches then took five of six singles to cruise to an 8-1 victory over Cal State L.A. in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's tennis match Sunday afternoon.
With the win the Aggies improve to 9-10 on the season and conclude the CCAA regular-season with a 6-2 record. Cal State L.A. falls to 11-8 overall, 3-5 in conference play.
UC Davis took the first two doubles matches by a score of 8-0 as Janice Salomon and Nancy Mok at No.1 and Gretchen Schantz and Ally Muller at No.2 recorded convincing victories. Jennifer Fong and Ashley Lehman paired at No.3 for an 8-4 win over Charise Godoy and Melissa White.
In singles, Godoy provided the Golden Eagles with their only victory, a 6-3, 7-5 win over Salomon at No.1. That would be all for Cal State L.A. as UC Davis won the remaining five matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Muller at No.3.
"It's always good to get a win and today's match is good preparation for next week's big event," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze, referring to UC Davis hosting the CCAA Championships next Thursday-Saturday. "The way it looks we probably will face this same Cal State L.A. team in the first round and mentally today's win is a good way to go into that match.
"It was a good trip for us this weekend and now we are looking forward to the conference tournament."
The CCAA Women's Tennis Championships will run all day, Thursday through Saturday, at Hickey Courts.
