DAVIS, Calif. - After dropping the opening doubles point, UC Santa Barbara stormed back to sweep all six singles matches for the 6-1 victory over UC Davis in a women's tennis match Saturday, spoiling the Aggies home finale at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
With the loss the Aggies end their dual match season with a 4-16 record.
UC Davis jumped out strong, taking two of three doubles matches for the opening point. Ally Muller and Robin Guier earned an 8-6 win over Marielle Gruenig and Chelsea Glynn at No.1 while Ashley Lehman and Audrey Wingo also posted an 8-6 win over Amy Vyhnis and Julia Gast at No.3. At No.2, the Gauchos earned an 8-3 win as Andrea Pintar and Leslie Damion defeated Amanda Wise and Kaitlin Callan.
In singles play UC Santa Barbara clinched the matches with straight-set wins at No.'s 3-6, while the top two spots both went to a third set. At No.3 Pintar defeated Wingo, 6-1, 6-4, while Gast posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Callan at No.4. Damion closed out Wise's home career with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Aggie senior while another senior, Lehman, dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Kristen Wilson at No.6.
At No.1, Muller jumped out a 6-2 lead against Gruenig, ranked No.96 in the most recent ITA rankings. But she could not hold the lead as Gruenig won the second 6-1, then won a 10-0 super tiebreaker for the third. With the team victory already clinched, the super tiebreaker was played in place of a third set. At No.2 Guier won a second-set tiebreaker, but then dropped a super tiebreaker for the third, falling 6-3, 6-7, (10-4).
The match marked the final home appearance for Wise and Lehman, who have spent the past four seasons in an Aggie uniform.
UC Davis will close out its 2005 season beginning Thursday at the Independent College Championships in Ojai.
