Aggies Advance To Friday's Semifinals At CCAA Championships

CCAA First Day Results

DAVIS, Calif. - No.3 UC Davis jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles the put the match away with two singles victories as the Aggies advanced Friday's semifinals with a 5-0 victory over No.6 Cal State L.A. in the first round of play at the 2003 California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships Thursday at Hickey Courts.

With the win the Aggies improve to 10-10 on the season and advance to face No.2 UC San Diego in Friday's second semifinal. Cal State L.A. falls to 11-8 and will face No.7 San Francisco State on Friday morning.

In doubles action the Aggies' the top two teams earned 8-1 victories as Janice Salomon and Nancy Mok at No.1 and Gretchen Schantz and Ally Muller at No.2 earned wins. At No.3 doubles, the Aggie duo of Christy Battig and Jennifer Fong battled for the 8-6 win over the Golden Eagle pair of Charise Godoy and Melissa White, 8-6.

In singles play, Fong pushed the lead to 4-0 as she defeated White, 6-0, 6-2 at No.6 singles before Battig clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brittany Keeler at No.5. Muller was leading 6-4, 3-0 over Kelly McLain at No.3 when the match was stopped while Mok was ahead of Jessica Scruggs, 6-1, 3-2, when Battig clinched. Both Salomon at No.1 singles and Schantz at No.2 had dropped their first sets, but were even in the second when play was stopped.

"This was the perfect match to begin the championships," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze. We felt we were the better team going in and we played with a lot of confidence. We wanted an efficient match where we played well and were tested and that's exactly what happened."

 

 

The CCAA championships continue all day on Friday with play beginning at 9am. UC Davis will begins its match at 2pm. The CCAA championships conclude on Saturday.
