DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Ally Muller recorded the clinching victory with a straight-set victory over Sarah Mitchell at No.3 singles as No.3 UC Davis defeated No.4 Grand Canyon, 5-2, in the third place match of the 2003 California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships Saturday afternoon at Hickey Courts.

With the win the Aggies improve to 11-11 on the season and now await word on who they will face in the NCAA Division II West Region Championships, May 2-4. Grand Canyon falls to 7-11 with the loss.

UC Davis, the two-time defending CCAA champions, opened the day by capturing two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 heading into singles. The Aggies won at No.2 where Gretchen Schantz and Muller won a decisive 8-0 victory over Shawna Young and Karen Cervantez while Christy Battig and Jennifer Fong won at No.3, defeating Sarah Mitchell and Liza Wilbirt, 8-3.

In singles play, UC Davis extended the lead to 4-1 as Nancy Mok at No.4 and Fong at No.5 each posted convincing victories. Grand Canyon's Robyn Jaeger recorded the Antelopes only singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Schantz at No.2 before Muller clinched the match for UC Davis with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Mitchell at No.3.

"It was a nice way to finish the conference tournament," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze. "It was a difficult loss yesterday (to UC San Diego) and I was impressed with how we came back today. We played loose, had fun and played a good match. It was appropriate that Ally clinched the match for us as she has been our most clutch player all season. I can't say enough about her."

In other CCAA action, No.1 Cal Poly Pomona captured its first CCAA title under Head Coach Sandy Kriezel with a 5-0 victory over No.2 UC San Diego. No.5 Sonoma State defeated No.6 Cal State L.A., 5-1, in the fifth-place match and No.7 San Francisco State defeated No.8 Cal State, San Bernardino, 5-3, in the seventh-place match.
