Ojai, Calif. - Sophomore Ally Muller advanced to the semifinals while both Aggie doubles teams saw their weekends come to end in the quarterfinals following the second day of play at the 2004 Ojai Valley Championships on Friday.
After winning two matches on Thursday, Muller posted an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Courtney Armstrong of UC Santa Cruz in Friday quarterfinal. Muller will face Ashley Stimple of Point Loma Nazarene in Saturday's semifinal.
In doubles play, Ashley Lehman and Amanda Wise captured their second-round match with a come-from-behind, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Jen Goebel and Kendyll Whiting of Westmont. In their quarterfinal match, the pair played two close sets but couldn't get over the hump as Whitney Henderson and Kelli Howard of Pomona earned the 7-6, 6-4 win.
The other Aggie duo, Jennifer Fong and Christy Battig, also won their second-round match in three sets, defeating Vicky Chen and Betsy Mork of Pomona, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. In their quarterfinal round, the pair dropped a first-set tiebreaker and got no closer as Jen Hansen and Becca Hunau of Cal Lutheran came away with the 7-6, 6-2 win.
"Our doubles teams hung in there and just couldn't come away with the wins in their final matches," said Aggie head coach Bill Maze. "Today also marked the last collegiate match for senior Jen Fong. Jen has been a great leader for our team, both on the court and in the classroom. She is an incredible role model for our entire team and I believe her work ethic and the approach she took as a student-athlete will set the tone for future Aggie teams."
Play continues at the Ojai Championships through Sunday.
