INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - In addition to capturing the doubles point, Melissa Kobayakawa, Nicole Koehly and Tiffany Pham recorded singles victories to help UC Davis defeat UC Riverside 4-0 in the first round of action at the Big West Women's Tennis Championships Thursday afternoon in Indian Wells, Calif.
With a victory over the tournament's No. 10 seed, No. 7 UC Davis improves its overall record to 11-12. UC Riverside ends its season with a 1-16 mark.
The Aggies will now face No. 45 Long Beach State, the event's No. 2 seed, in an 8 a.m. quarterfinal matchup at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
UC Davis started its match against the Highlanders with an impressive 8-0 doubles victory thanks to Ellie Edles and Pham. With their shutout over UC Riverside's Natalie McKay and Courtney Pattugalan, the Aggies needed just one more win from the two remaining matchups to take an early lead.
That 1-0 Aggie advantage became reality shortly thereafter when Kobayakawa and Lauren Curry pulled away from Kat Saltarelli and Kate Bergeson, 9-7, to help their team take a 1-0 overall lead and bring an end to the final doubles matchup still in action.
UC Davis continued to post winning scores throughout the singles round, with the bottom half of the lineup leading the way to extend the Aggies' season another day.
Kobayakawa and Pham completed their individual sweeps at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions over McKay and Bergeson. The first singles match to end, Kobayakawa earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory; Pham followed with a win of her own, also needing just two sets to down Bergeson 6-4, 6-3.
Facing UC Riverside's No. 5 in Pattugalan, Koehly ended the day with another straight-set Aggie victory by a 6-3, 6-3 score to complete her team's sweep.
In the day's other first round match No. 8 Pacific ended No. 9 Cal Poly's year with a 4-1 win.
Other 8 a.m. quarterfinal matchups include No. 1 UC Irvine facing Pacific and No. 3 UC Santa Barbara taking on No. 6 Cal State Northridge. The last match of the morning will see No. 4 Hawai'i square off against No. 5 Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m.
