POMONA, Calif. - No.3 Hawaii Pacific rallied from a 2-1 deficit following doubles to win four singles matches and defeat No.6 UC Davis, 5-3, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's West Regional, played Friday at the Kellogg Tennis Complex.

With the loss the Aggies conclude their season at 11-12, having reached the NCAA Championships for the 18th consecutive season. These same two teams met in Davis on April 7 with HPU coming away with an 8-1 victory.

Friday was a different match as the Aggies captured two of the three opening doubles matches after being swept in the first meeting. Janice Salomon and Nancy Mok at No.1 and Gretchen Schantz and Ally Muller at No.2 both earned victories for UC Davis. In singles play, only Jennifer Fong at No.6 could pull out a victory for UC Davis. Fong had dropped a straight-set loss against Shakti Stream in the first meeting but rebounded for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Stream on Friday. HPU won at the top three singles and then at No.5 for its four wins, which clinched the match.

"It was a good battle, a marked improvement over the last time we played them," said Aggie Head Coach Bill Maze. "I was impressed with the attitude and effort our team put forth. It was completely different than the last time we played them in terms of approach.

"It was tough to see Janice Salomon and Gretchen Schantz play their last match for the Ags," Maze continued. "They have been wonderful contributors and great people to have on the team. As have our other seniors, Alisse Ali-Christie, who has missed all season with a shoulder injury but has contributed as a coach all year, and Kerri Roemer, who didn't make the trip but certainly contributed with her efforts all season."
