BERKELEY, Calif. - Three of the six UC Davis singles matchups took place against seeded opposition and both doubles teams in action at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif., advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round in the opening day of action at the Cal Nike Invite.

Even though Megan Heneghan fell to third-seeded Brynn Boren, one of six nationally ranked USC players competing in this weekend's event, she rebounded with a strong performance in the Blue Singles Consolation round to blank Sacramento State's Alina Solanici by matching 6-0 set scores.

Due to the amount of student-athletes participating throughout the three-day event, draws were disseminated in three brackets -- blue, white and gold.

The Gold grouping saw Tiffany Pham capture a first-set tiebreak en route to a 7-6 (8), 6-2, straight-set victory over UC Santa Barbara's Stacy Yam. The only Aggie to advance to the Round of 16 in any of the three main draws, Pham fell to San Francisco's Mil Hadzi-Tanovic in her following match.

Also earning a split of her singles matches played at Cal Friday afternoon was Melissa Kobayakawa. After falling to fifth-seeded Savannah Ware from BYU, Kobayakawa completed her comeback effort by winning a third-set tiebreak against Nevada's Sheila Smiley to advance to the second consolation round of the Gold bracket.

After dropping the first set 4-6, Kobayakawa broke Smiley's serve throughout the entire second frame to post a 6-0 score, then pulled away in the third to extend her stay in singles competition another day.

In doubles action, both UC Davis pairings posted identical 8-4 scores to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. Sanders and Nicole Koehly, the Gold bracket's top seed, defeated BYU's Nicolette Tran Toby Miclat in the pair's only doubles contest of the day.

With their win over Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke Stephanie Skaras, Heneghan and Kobayakawa also advanced to the next round.

A live stream of action taking place on all six courts at the Hellman Tennis Complex, and a link to access Saturday's results are available at ucdavisaggies.com.
