UC Davis Completes First Day Of Play At Saint Mary's Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. - Ally Muller, Yuka Otaka, Amanda Wise and Jennifer Fong all won their first round matches during the first day of play at the Saint Mary's College ITA Women's Tennis Invitational Friday morning.

In opening-round play, Muller defeated Sonoma's Kim Coulson, 6-1, 6-2 while Otaka also was a straight-set winner over Nicole Hunstock of Saint Mary's 6-4, 6-3. Wise needed three sets to defeat Laura Roberson of Sonoma State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Jennifer Fong had a 7-6, 7-5 win over Santa Clara's Kristen Ruso to advance to the second round. All four Aggies then dropped their second-round matches to seeded players, with Wise falling 6-1, 6-0 to No.2-seed Anna Erricsson of Sacramento State.

Other Aggies competing at the Saint Mary's Invitational included Audrey Wingo, who, following a first-round bye, fell 6-1, 6-4 to Amanda Sanchez of Sacramento State. Ashley Lehman reached a first-set tiebreaker before falling 7-6, 6-0 to Maile Smith of the University of San Francisco. Junior Nancy Mok extended her match to three sets before losing to Kim Daniel of Santa Clara, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 while Luna Tieu lost 6-1, 6-2 to Megan Tiegs of San Francisco.

Christy Battig fell 6-1, 6-2 to Sacramento State's Cristina Rivieccio, also in the first round. In doubles play the Aggies went 1-1 on the afternoon with Muller and Mok defeating Cherie Pettersson and Christine Tilley of Nevada, 8-0. Wingo and Fong dropped their match 8-3 to Air Force's Karissa Walker and Kat Bushey.

 

 

"I saw some good efforts out on the court today," said Aggie head coach Bill Maze. "The results are difficult because of all the Division I players in the draw but the attitudes and efforts were great. I was enjoying watching the tennis today."

Play continues at the Saint Mary's Invitational through Sunday.
