STANFORD, Calif. – Two UC Davis consolation singles victories and another two competitive matches that nearly ended in the Aggies' favor took place throughout the second day of action from the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif., at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships Saturday afternoon.
Megan Heneghan was one of two Aggies to post a win throughout the day as she downed Cal’s Cecilia Estandler 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (5). The other, Tiffany Pham, recorded a straight set sweep over Sacramento State's Olivia Boija.
Pushed to a tiebreak in her first singles set, Pham emerged victorious with a 7-6 (4) set score, and easily captured the following frame, 6-2, to defeat her cross-Causeway rival.
Kamila Kecki nearly became the third Aggie to capture a victory were it not for a third set tiebreak that did not fall in her favor. After defeating Santa Clara’s Nicolette Wolny 6-2 in the first set, Kecki dropped the second set 3-6 to force a 10-point match tiebreak. In a highly competitive final set, Wolny edged Kecki 10-6 to advance to the next round.
Heneghan and Pham were also involved in heartbreaking decision that did not fall their way by the slimmest of margins. Against Amelia Herring and Lindsey Kostas, two Stanford players who were competing in a familiar environment, UC Davis’ duo was unable to force a tiebreak and fell 8-6.
Saturday's schedule capped a weekend of action at Stanford for the Aggies; unlike traditional tournaments where players who drop their first main draw match are fed into a consolation draw, this event organized its consolation action in a different manner. Even though it is organized with brackets, consolation matches are conducted, if requested, by players and coaches from team's involved in this weekend's regional.
UC Davis will return to organized competition in its inaugural dual of the regular season, at Pacific, on Jan. 25.
