DAVIS, Calif. — After an almost three-month break from competition play, the UC Davis women’s tennis team officially starts their spring dual season this weekend as they make a trek up north to Portland, Ore., to go up against Portland State’s team on Jan, 20, and then Portland’s team on the following day (Jan. 21).
Freshman Shirley Hall and Jessica Walker, the newcomers that made their UC Davis debut during the fall tournament season, will now be making their dual debuts this weekend, while freshman Sara Tsukamoto, the newest addition to the UC Davis women’s tennis team, becoming official during the winter break, will soon be making her mark as a UC Davis Aggie.
As announced on the ITA team ranking released on Jan. 17, neither UC Davis nor Portland State and Portland are ranked among the nation’s top 25. As for individual ranking in singles and doubles, those will not make their 2018 debut until Feb. 7.
The last time UC Davis met on the courts with these teams was during the 2015 season. Looking back at those match ups, the Aggies defeated Portland State, 6-1, after sweeping the doubles round and five out of the six singles matches that day, but with Portland, the doubles point would have made all the difference for the Aggies as they eventually fell to a close 4-3 final score.
