DAVIS, Calif. - Thanks to the efforts of Layla Sanders, not only did UC Davis capture victories in both matches played last week to record its first Big West win and second victory of the season over a nationally-ranked team, but the sophomore from El Cerrito, Calif., also became the first player this season to earn Big West Player of the Week accolades.
In the Aggies' come-from-behind effort against No. 64 San Jose State, it was Sanders who defeated the Spartans' Sabastiani Leon Chao in the final set of the final singles match of the day to record her team's third straight singles triumph, providing the final touches on a match that saw UC Davis turn a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 victory.
Less than a day before the Aggies' earned their second victory of the season over a ranked opponent, Sanders swept both matches played against Cal Poly to help UC Davis end its inagural conference game of the season with a win.
Sanders opened her day against the Mustangs alongside doubles partner Nicole Koehly to defeat Cal Poly's Jen Cornea and Ane McPike 8-2. Sanders then rebounded after dropping the first set of her singles match 7-5 to Cornea to win the last two sets 6-4, 7-5.
Sanders and her teammates are enjoying a break in their schedule, one that will end when the Aggies face the UC Irvine Anteaters on Friday, March, 15, UC Davis' first Big West road match of the year.
