DAVIS, Calif. – Prior to the start of Saturday’s men’s and women’s tennis doubleheader against UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis Athletics will honor Marya Welch by unveiling a new entrance to her Tennis Center and plaque in her honor at 10:30 a.m. Festivities will take place outside the main gates off Howard Way across from the North Entry Parking Structure.
Associated with the university for 46 years as a professor and dean, Welch was a supporter of the arts and Aggie athletics since her arrival to campus in 1947.
Utilizing what limited resources were available, she established the women’s athletics programs and fielded competitive teams in tennis, volleyball, archery, basketball, track and field, softball, and swimming – sports she coached as well.
Inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991, Welch later served as the grand marshal of the Picnic Day Parade in 1999.
In addition to the Marya Welch Tennis Center, the campus also has Marya Welch Court, comprising four apartment buildings at Colleges of La Rue.
Admission is free to both Saturday’s dedication and tennis doubleheader.
