DAVIS, Calif. - A total of 27 UC Davis student-athletes from eight different winter and spring teams garnered Big West Academic All-Conference honors, it was announced by the league office. Specifically, the Aggie contingent comprised two from women's basketball, four from baseball, two from men's tennis, three from women's tennis, two from women's golf, one from men's track & field, nine from women's track & field, and four from women's water polo.
To be eligible for Big West All-Academic honors, student-athletes must hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher, complete one full year at the member institution prior to the year for which the award is bestowed, and compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests for that year.
Thanks in part to its overall roster size, Big West-champion women's track & field had the largest group of UC Davis honorees. Seniors Sarah Sumpter and Lauren Wallace picked up their third Spring All-Academic nods. Both have won five total when including their fall awards in cross country. Sophomore Katie Barber and juniors Nicole Aha, Alycia Cridebring, Kellie Grigg, Shannon Harcus, Shanie Landen and Kira Rienecker also made the honor roll from track & field. Sophomore Trevor Ehlenbach was the lone male track athlete to earn All-Academic distinction.
Women's water polo and baseball each had four Aggie honorees. From the tank were juniors Hannah Curran and Erin Schlueter, plus sophomores Elsie Fullerton and Jillian Wilding. The diamond representatives were seniors Patrick Hennessey and Austin Logan, junior Harry Stanwyck and sophomore John Williams.
The two tennis teams combined for five honorees, including a pair of three-time winners. On the men's side, seniors Toki Sherbakov and Hugo Verdi-Fortin made the honor roll. Senior Lauren Curry and juniors Megan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa represented the women. Sherbakov and Curry each won Big West All-Academic in 2011 and 2012.
Women's basketball and women's golf each claimed two recipients. Junior Idit Oryon and sophomore Emily Vann represented the hardcourt. Seniors Demi Runas and Amy Simanton hailed from women's golf, which also won the university's Marya Welch Award for women's team GPA this year.
In all, the Big West Conference issued 410 All-Academic awards during the 2012-13 year.
