DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team opens the 2012-13 fall slate on Friday at the Cal Nike Invitational, hosted by Cal at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley.
UC Davis is part of a 13-team field that includes Fresno State, Pacific, BYU, Arizona State, Nevada, Santa Clara, Minnesota, Saint Mary's, San Jose State, Sacramento State and San Francisco. Over 80 players will participate in the three-day tournament that will showcase three singles flights and three doubles flights.
Led by 17th year head coach Bill Maze, the Aggies look to pick up the 2012-13 season where they left off last year. UC Davis returns seven players from the 2011-12 squad that advanced to the Big West Conference Tournament semifinals as the No. 2 seed, including two-time All-Big West First Team selection Megan Heneghan.
UC Davis swept Pacific in the quarterfinals, earning the program's first ever win at the Big West Conference Tournament, but fell to UC Irvine in the semifinals. Heneghan was joined by Layla Sanders on the all-conference list after Sanders picked up a second team doubles honor.
Heneghan leads a veteran group of returners for Maze, including seniors Lauren Curry, who posted the team's best Big West record at 6-1, and junior Nicole Koehly, who concluded her sophomore campaign with a 14-10 overall record.
Joining the Aggies will be newcomers Tiffany Pham and Claire Jaramishian who arrive at UC Davis after stellar prep careers. Pham won four consecutive Delta Valley Conference titles, accumulating a 50-1 record at Laguna Creek HS in nearby Elk Grove, Calif. Jaramishian was named the Fresno Bee's Girls' Tennis Player of the Year after an undefeated 22-0 senior season at Bullard HS in Fresno.
During the fall, UC Davis will also compete at the Saint Mary's Invitational (Oct. 12-14) and the ITA Regional (Oct. 19-23) in Stanford, Calif.
Regular season action begins on Jan. 18 at Northern Arizona. The Aggies' home opener will bring Santa Clara to the Marya Welch Tennis Complex on Feb. 3. UC Davis will host Big West Conference foe Cal Poly on Mar. 2, then close the regular season with six straight home matches.
The Big West Championships will be held Apr. 25-28 in Indian Wells, Calif.
