DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team begins its fall tournament schedule this weekend when it takes part in the Cal Nike Invitational at Berkeley. The competition features 13 teams and runs Friday, Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 2, with matches held at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

In addition to UC Davis, California, Arizona State, BYU, Fresno State, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s College, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, and USC will be competing.

The tournament will feature two 32-woman singles flights (Gold and Blue) and one 16-woman singles flight (White) as well as two 16-team doubles flights (Gold and Blue) and one eight-team doubles flight (White). Play begins at 8 a.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 30, with the first round of doubles matches in all flights. Championship matches will take place in the afternoon on Sunday, Oct. 2.

This weekend's action will be the first of three fall tournaments for the Aggies. UC Davis will also take part in the St. Mary's Invitational (Oct. 14-16) and ITA Northwest Regional Championships (Oct. 21-25).

UC Davis is coming off one of its best seasons under head coach Bill Maze after finishing with a 17-7 overall record and a 6-2 mark in Big West play. In the 2011 spring season, the Aggies received the first ITA ranking in program history, climbing as high as No. 56. Coach Maze was named Big West Coach of the Year and Megan Heneghan received Big West Freshman of Year honors, in addition to several other post season honors.
