DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team will travel to Stanford to compete in its final tournament of the fall season, the USTA/ITA Northwest REgional Championships, hosted by Stanford at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium Oct. 19-23.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top players from across the country with over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Div. I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges in action this weekend. The Div. I Women's Regional Championship will be held at 12 different competition sites.
Singles play on Friday and Saturday begins at 10 a.m. with Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium hosting the regional for the sixth straight year.
The competition field features some of the strongest players in all of Div. I, higlighted by Stanford's Stacey Gibbs who was ranked the No. 1 player in the country in the Campbell's/ITA Preseason Rankings. Cal's Zsofi Susanyi is ranked fifth nationally while Stacey Tan, also of Stanford, is 16th.
In doubles, Tan and partner Ellen Tsay are the ninth-ranked duo in Div. I.
All nine Aggie women will compete in a singles bracket that features a 128-line draw in addition to a consolation bracket.
Ellie Edles will face Washington's Elianne Doubles-Miron in her first round match while Megan Heneghan will take on Sacramento State's Jennifer Nguyen. Melissa Kobakayawa, who comes off a Blue Singles title at last weekend's Saint Mary's Invitational, will face Washington State's Olga Musilovich.
Layla Sanders faces Eastern Washington's Chelsea Patton while Nicole Koehly squares off against Audrey Leitz of Saint Mary's. Freshman Claire Jaramishian earned a first round bye on Friday, while fellow newcomer Tiffany Pham will take on Chrissy Uriarte from Eastern Washington.
Zoe Davidson will face Washington State's Charlotte Koning while Lauren Curry plays Oregon's Sofia Hager to round out first round singles action for UC Davis.
In doubles, Heneghan and Sanders earned a first round bye and will take on Washington State's Koning and teammate Andjela Kankaras on Saturday.
Curry and Koehly face a duo from Sacramento State on Friday morning while Edles and Pham face a pair from Saint Mary's. Davidson and Kobayakawa round out the Aggie doubles teams and will take on Yurie Hashiguchi and Brooke Irish of San Francisco.
The ITA Regional comes just five days after UC Davis' last tournament, the Saint Mary's Invitational in Moraga. In her 2012-13 debut, Kobayakawa claimed the Blue Singles division title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Washington's Brianna Kemp in the Oct. 14 final.
Davidson advanced to the Blue Singles consolation finals as did Pham and Edles in the White Doubles bracket to highlight UC Davis' play at the Saint Mary's Invite.
